Study of the Selonian region in Lithuania

img-0953-original.webpThe study covers the Selonia cultural and historical region, which is closely connected to the territories along the present-day northern border of Lithuania. The border regions of Selonia and Lithuania form a unique cultural and natural space, whose shared heritage has developed over several centuries. Today, these areas offer not only beautiful and unspoilt natural landscapes and a unique history, but also shared cultural identity values, the roots of which can be traced back several thousand years. As once stated by Academician Professor Jānis Stradiņš in one of his addresses during the Selonia Days in 1995: “The Selonians are one of the mysteries of Latvian identity.”

Exploring and uncovering this mystery provides opportunities to develop distinctive cultural and nature tourism routes encompassing southeastern Selonia and northern Lithuania — Birži (Biržai), Rokišķi (Rokiškis), Kupišķi (Kupiškis) and Pasvale (Pasvalys).

This study has been developed within the framework of the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027, Project No. LL-00132 “Tourism Offer Development in the Selonia Region” (Tourism offer development in Selonia Region / Weekend in Village). This study has been prepared with the financial support of the European Union. The Aizkraukle Municipality bears full responsibility for the content of this study, and under no circumstances should it be regarded as reflecting the official position of the European Union.
